The itinerary

Day 1

Arrive Edinburgh Airport. Meet your tour guide and board coach. Drive south of the border into England crossing the border into the Roman province of Britannia in the process.

Day 6

Depart for London today. En route we make a visit to Silchester Roman town. The complete circuit of the Roman Town Walls and the amphitheatre of the Roman Town are open to visitors all year round. It is a mile and half walk along the Roman walls and the North Gates and South gates into the Roman Town are well worth a visit. The amphitheatre is located just outside the Roman Town, to the north-east. Although the seating does not survive, the atmosphere does!

Day 2

A full day devoted to visiting sites along Hadrian's Wall including Segedunum Roman Fort, Birdoswald Roman Fort & Vindolanda.

Stretching 73 miles from coast to coast, Hadrian's Wall was built to guard the wild north-west frontier of the Roman Empire. Today you can explore the Wall's rich history and its dramatic landscape at over twenty different sites.

Day 7

This morning enjoy a walking tour of Roman London including a visit to the Museum of London.

This afternoon visit the British Museum with its extensive collection of Roman artefacts and works of art.

Day 3

Depart Durham and continue journey south to Chester. On arrival there will be a sightseeing tour of Roman Chester including the Dewa Roman Experience and also a visit to the amphitheatre.

Day 8

Today visit to Colchester & Museum. The Roman collection contains some of the finest examples surviving from Roman Britain. These include: the tombstone of the Roman centurion Marcus Favonius Facillis, the tombstone of a Roman auxiliary cavalry soldier Longinus Sdapeze, the Gosbecks Mercury (a bronze statue measuring 53.5 cm in height), the Colchester Sphinx (a stone sculpture that would have adorned an elaborate Roman tomb) and the 'Colchester Vase' (a ceramic vessel depicting four gladiators and a hunting scene).

Day 4

Depart Chester and travel  to Cirencester in Gloucestershire for a visit to Corinium Museum and explore the town which was once the second largest town in Roman Britain and has the ruins of one of the largest Roman amphitheatres in the country.

DAY 9

Today there will be a full day excursion to visit Fishbourne Palace and Bignor Roman Villa. At Fishbourne you will the remains of the largest domestic Roman building in Britain with many impressive floor mosaics  underfloor heating systems, corridors and courtyards. The story of the site is told in an audio-visual programme using computer generated imagery. 

At Bignor Roman Villa there are the stunning remains of a Roman home with world-class mosaic floors in a spectacular Downland setting.

Day 5

Excursion to Bath for a guided visit to Roman Baths Museum.

The Roman Baths is located at the heart of the World Heritage City of Bath. Here, the Romans built a magnificent temple and bathing complex on the site of Britain's only hot spring, which still flows with naturally hot water.

Walk around the steaming Great Bath where people bathed nearly 2,000 years ago and see the ruins of the temple of Minerva where Roman worshippers gathered.

Afterwards continue to Stonehenge, the ancient stone circle whose function is still shrouded in mystery.
